Gordon Speers became Conductor and Musical Director of Portadown Ladies Choir in their 40th anniversary year.
In the intervening years Gordon has nurtured, encouraged and directed the ladies in a wide range of musical performances taking them from strength to strength with numerous successes at festivals locally and, more notably, further afield at Cork International Festival.
As well as having established himself as one of the leading choral conductors in the Province, Gordon is as well known as a solo artist throughout Ireland, having studied with the late John Donnan, William Boyd and Frank Capper MBE.
With his rich, sonorous bass voice Gordon excels equally on the concert, recital and oratoria platform. Combining his diverse musical background with a lengthy period in local drama societies he later undertook many leading roles with Lurgan Operatic Society, winning top awards at Waterford International Festival of Light Opera to great acclaim.
Gordon draws on this wealth of musical and drama influences in his work as Conductor to the Ladies Choir both in the extensive range of chosen repertoire and the style and interpretation of each piece. Central to all is his sheer love of music, to which he has dedicated so much of his life.
Gordon was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honour List 2014 for his dedication to Music.
